Summer = Triathlon = L.O.V.E.

I am not the kind of person to jump on a bandwagon; in fact, I tend to deliberately do the opposite. It’s not that I don’t like group activities or don’t want to do what everyone else is doing. It’s just in my nature to march to the beat of my own drum. There are times, of course, when I toe the line and sign up for the same race as a bunch of teammates, but I find I’m just as happy going solo.

So my first reaction when my good friend RunWiki posted her Six Summer Running Essentials, a follow-up to Miss Zippy’s What I’m Loving Right Now #fitgear, which was a follow-up to Shut Up and Run’s 5 Things I’m Loving Right Now, was “I like it, and love reading this stuff, but everyone’s doing it and so I’m not.” It’s a knee-jerk reaction that I’m working on…

And then a strange thing happened. I started thinking about the things I love. The clothing I love to work out in, the foods I love to eat; dammit, I was even on my bike last week and said, out loud to my training partners, “I love my bike!” Who does that? Maybe I should look into therapy, but writing a post is cheaper.

So, without further excuses or explanations, here’s my list of summer triathlon (I have to be a little different) #fitgear:

I feel fast in TYR durafast...

1. TYR Durafast diamondback swimsuit. I have tried many suits since I started swimming regularly 4 years ago. First up was a 14-year-old number that immediately disintegrated upon contact with the water. Fortunately I was swimming at night so no-one could see my awful technique… These days I am a swim snob and ONLY wear TYR diamondback suits. They fit great, don’t ride up (or down), allowing me to focus on the swim and not whether my suit is working its way into my butt crack. As anyone who swims knows, suits have a horrifyingly short shelf-life, and so I buy them in bulk from Swimoutlet. I’ll often buy the “grab bag” as I don’t care too much about color, just the style, and this saves a ton of $$$. (The suit pictured is my favorite; the color is Pacific Plaid.)

Nuun - don't ride/run/swim without it!

2. Kona Cola and Banana Nuun. While I like Nuun for its portability, great electrolyte balance, and low sugar, I must admit I’m not a fan of most of the flavors. I used to really enjoy Banana but then it was discontinued (story of my life, it seems). Fortunately I found Kona Cola, which soon became a new addiction…strange because I don’t actually drink coke. Just a few days ago Nuun announced they are bringing back Banana flavor as one of their special Tour de France flavors (Nuun says, “Banana: for the leaders” which I really like!) , so I plan to stock up! If you haven’t tried Nuun or are running low, now’s a great time to buy as from now until July 6th shipping is free!

For once my outfit matches...

3 AND 4. Brooks Epiphany Stretch Short and Athleta Sprint Seamless Bra. I love these shorts – they’re the only shorts I wear for running. They provide great coverage, don’t flap around, and have a cute color matching waistband that you can fold down to show off your abs. I love teaming up this pair with the blue Athleta sports bra as the colors match perfectly! The bra fits really well and, because it’s very stretchy, is much easier to pull on and take off (esp. when sweat-soaked!) than most other sports bras, so if you’re like me and hate getting all tangled up in your sports bra, check this one out.

Shorts with built-in AC!

5. 2XU Compression Tri Short. These are my favorite biking shorts. I don’t actually wear them when racing triathlon because I prefer the fit of my all-in-one suit, but I love wearing these shorts for long rides. The compression really helps my legs stay fresh and they have this ICE X feature explained on the web site as follows: “Xylitol is embedded in the yarn of the fabric to draw heat from the body and IR blocking inhibits penetration of infrared rays to lower skin temperature by up to 5.4°F.” I thought that must be bunk (how could a short provide cooling?) but I have experienced it for myself on a ride on the hottest day of the year when my team-mates were complaining about the heat and I felt like the Ice Queen. Fantastic, fascinating stuff.

Spring onions, radishes, zucchini, squash, kale, tart cherries!

6. CSA veggies. I’d be remiss if I didn’t include my weekly veggie box from Great Country Farms in the #fitgear list, as it’s an essential part of my training right now. I am far from a gourmet cook, and find it a challenge to incorporate all the veggies into my meals, but I am eating a much healthier diet because of it. The patty pan squash recipe I made last night was delicious and I found I had a little extra energy for this morning’s swim, probably because of it. Don’t forget to eat your veggies!

Things I Might Have Missed

I didn’t want to ride 50 miles today. 50 mile rides are for weekends. But when you’ve got a race on the weekend, the 50 mile ride has to move. I had actually hoped I could just make it disappear, but according to the coach you can’t just drop the long ride when training for a Half Ironman. (Note to self: in future don’t schedule races during Half Ironman training. Better still, don’t sign up for a Half Ironman…)

So there I was, on a Wednesday morning, getting ready for a 50 mile ride, having just done 5 miles of track workout, because apparently I can’t scratch that either. Thank goodness I had my partner in pain, Meggan, riding with me otherwise I think I would have feigned sickness and laid on the couch all day. So we rode. And rode. And rode some more. At 25 miles we stopped at my house to pee and refill water bottles. I am making sure I am well hydrated for Sunday.

The first 40 miles were ok. And then the agony set in. The bike shorts were uncomfortable. I have one pair of shorts that I like to wear on long rides, and they were AWOL (probably still in the laundry basket from Saturday’s long ride) , as were my second-favorite pair. My achilles started to hurt…What?! My achilles never hurts! I kept having to crack my neck. I wanted to get off. And then, when it got really bad the last few miles, I started thinking about all the things I had seen during the ride, and how I would have missed all that had I laid on my couch instead.

So I have compiled a top 10 “What I Would Have Missed if I Hadn’t Ridden 50 Miles Today” list:

  1. Kids running, as in training. Impressive.
  2. The wonderful taste of kona cola nuun and cola PowerBar Gel Blasts.
  3. Hills. ;)
  4. Almost squashing a squirrel.
  5. Getting cooled off by the sprinklers.
  6. Pringles.
  7. A lady watering her garden while her kids sat watching in their strollers. Cute.
  8. A landscaper on a stand-on mower doing crazy fast donuts around the trees.
  9. Drivers actually stopping to let us go. Thank you.
  10. A man walking with a cockatoo on his shoulder. Yeah, that was a double take.
When I got home I refueled with chocolate milk, peeled off my gross biking gear (aaahhhh) and ate a cheeseburger. There’s nothing quite like the feeling when you’re done with a 50 mile ride. :)

Feeding my Addiction

I once ate cheese fondue right before a cross-country race. In my defense, it was in France, twenty years ago. Back then, the closest anyone I knew got to pre-race nutrition was eating a Mars bar on the start line. Hydration was for sissies. I remember taking Lucozade (dextrose) tablets to a marathon relay in High School and getting a lot of flak from other athletes because runners just didn’t take nutritional supplements back then. Never heard of Lucozade? It’s a well-known energy supplement brand in the UK. Twenty five years ago, it was pretty much the only game in town…and not a well-known one at that, despite having Olympic decathlete Daley Thompson as its spokesman.

Today, nutrition and hydration for endurance athletes is a big deal, and an even bigger business. The variety of products on the market is huge, almost overwhelming, and includes drinks, bars, gels, chews, you name it. And the flavors! Remember when there was just lemon-lime Gatorade?! We’re spoiled for choice, and everyone has their opinions and preferences. At the end of the day, of course, you have to find what works for you.

I’ve been a GU fan for a long time. (The Lucozade thing didn’t last…) In fact, vanilla bean GU used to be the only supplement I’d even consider. I’ve since broadened my horizons, adding Roctane, Nuun and Camelbak electrolyte tablets, and Honey Stinger chews. Still, I know I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to trying out new stuff. My stomach knows what it likes and, well, you don’t want to mess with that. But, with my first Half Ironman coming up in October, I know I need a good nutrition plan, possibly a better one than my “2-GUs-an-hour” plan during Capon Valley 50K. I still think GU is one of the easiest running supplements because it’s compact, there’s less fiddling with packages, it goes down fast, and you don’t have to chew (sometimes that’s hard while running!), but eating on the bike is a lot easier, so I’m in the process of trying some other stuff for variety.

Yesterday, for my 50 mile ride (yes, I have broken through the 30 mile barrier!) I took some cola Powerbar Gel Blasts with me. I’m into this cola thing right now. I don’t drink coke at all but there’s something about that coke flavor when racing that I really like. I just ordered kona cola flavor Nuun. 4 tubes. Better be good. Anyway, about an hour into the ride I tried one of these little coke gummies. OMG. They are like crack. I had to stop myself from eating the entire bag in 10 seconds flat. (It’s supposed to last an hour.) They taste like those coke gummy bottles we used to eat as kids…only better. They were so good I had to share (even though I really wanted to keep them all to myself) and I gave one to Meggan at a light. She let out a shriek right as the light changed and I thought something was wrong, then realized it was a reaction to the gummy. I quickly ate all the rest before she asked for another.

Maybe there should be a govt. warning: Seriously Addictive

Once the ride was over I returned to Potomac River Running to buy up all the cola Powerbar Gel Blasts they had. I only saw 3 bags on the shelf so I asked if they had any more in stock. The guy opened a drawer behind the counter and I saw a gigantic box full of them. It took a lot of will power not to jump over the counter and grab them. “How many do you want?” he asked. “How many have you got?” I replied. I ended up buying 14 bags. The guy had seen the glint in my eye and knew better than to mess around with an addict in the store.

In case you’re not a cola freak they do also come in other flavors: lemon, raspberry, and strawberry-banana. Cola and strawberry-banana have caffeine. 1 bag has 45g carbs compared to a GU which has 25, so I’ll eat one bag in an hour whereas if I’m taking GU I need 2 per hour.

Incidentally, I’ve been learning some interesting nutritional stuff as I get ready for this Half Ironman, so thought I’d share. Hey, I’m a sharing person…unless it’s my cola gummies.

  • Eat 200 – 400 calories 2 hrs prior to an endurance event (longer than an hour)
  • Drink 16 – 20oz fluid when you wake up (you wake up dehydrated)
  • After the first hour of racing, you need to take in 400-600mg sodium/hr and 40 – 60g carbs/hr
  • Drink 16 – 32oz fluid/hr
  • Chocolate milk is one of the best recovery drinks because of the almost 4:1 carb to protein ratio
  • Got gas? Check the ingredients in all those high fiber foods. Inulin (chicory root) is the culprit. Seriously, after hearing this I went and looked at my double fiber wheat bread, Luna bars, Fiber One bars, Clif bars…inulin was a top ingredient in all of them. Holy smokes!
All this food talk is making me hungry…time for an inulin-free snack.

Finding Time and Saving Lolly

When I was in college I applied for a job as a news editor on the student newspaper. The current editors asked all the applicants to tell them about ourselves, and then asked each of us, “Do you have time to write for the paper?” Everyone else answered, “Yes, I have loads of time; I’m an English major!” My answer was different. I said, “No, I don’t have time, but it’s important to me so I’ll make time.”

I got the job. If there’s something you really want to do, you’ll make the time. You’ll make the time to train for that next race. You’ll get up early and get in your swim, bike, run. You’ll do it even though you have a million other things to do. Find the time…you know it won’t find you.

I have no idea where this post is going…that thought just popped into my head and so I wrote it down. So, what else is on my mind? Well, Athleta has a HUGE sale on right now, and who can resist Athleta when it’s up to 70% off? Because, let’s be honest, Athleta ain’t cheap, and I usually don’t look at the catalog because I’m like the kids with the Toys R Us Holiday Catalog…I’m circling EVERYTHING. Bonus: until August 5th, you can get an extra 20% off all sale items by entering the code SUMMER20 at checkout.

Athleta girls show us how to look good when training: 1. Get a cute outfit. 2. Go somewhere exotic. 3. Don't sweat. ;)

While we’re saving some lolly, I Run Like a Girl has a sweet 20% off deal on Nuun. While I’m a Camelbak Elixir aficionado these days, I used to drink Nuun way back when they just had three flavors, and am tempted to try out some of the new ones, like Kona Cola…

What are you doing still reading? Haven’t you got training and shopping to do? I know I have. ;)
